…NO! Finding a great deal on a delicious, complex, expressive and beautifully balanced wine that pairs beautifully with what you are cooking or eating, YES!
That’s the goal of the hunt. There is nothing more satisfying to me than that. Discovering a great wine that I can buy for a quarter of the price of a comparable bottle is one of my great joys.
Those deals are out there. There’s lots of them, but you have to search. Here’s a few things that I found out that can really help if you are new to this journey:
Find a great local wine shop
It really helps to have a wine merchant you trust who gets to know you and your preferences and your price range.
Research wine on your own
It’s no fun if you delegate your entire wine experience to one or two people who’s job it is to sell you wine. There are literally millions of resources both on line and in your local book store that will enlighten your search. (I will give a resource list later). There’s nothing more soul soothing than curling up with a nice glass of Côte-Rôtie and reading Janice Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine on a cool fall evening.
Taste a lot of wine
When I go to a restaurant, (usually one with a good wine list), I will order wines by the glass so I can experience more than one wine while I’m there. Also, a good server will let you have small tastes of any of the wines before you decide.
If you happen to be near a winery, go wine tasting. It’s best if they include the tasting cost in your purchase. Also, your local wine shop will have periodic tastings. Go to those
When I entertain, I will invite my guests to all bring a bottle of wine from a particular region or varietal that are under, say, $20. Out of six bottles, we may find one of two gems.
Taste wine with purpose
Think about what your tasting. Does it move you, make you think? Does it take you to a different place? Or does it fall flat, or at worst, repulse you? Either way it builds your knowledge base.
Ok, that’s it for now. I can’t wait to share more of my experiences with you and I hope I get to hear from you too!
